That said, <strong>rents are still up year-over-year in most of the nation\u2019s largest markets \u2014 77 of the 100 largest cities have seen rents increase over the past twelve months<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0<em>Urban Land Magazine <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/urbanland.uli.org\/economy-markets-trends\/lower-income-renters-see-persistent-housing-cost-burdens\/\">explained<\/a>\u00a0that,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c<em>Currently, <strong>nearly half (47 percent) of renter households are cost burdened<\/strong> (i.e., paying more than 30 percent of income for housing), while <strong>25 percent (totaling 11 million households) are severely cost burdened<\/strong>, paying over 50 percent of their total household income for rent<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These households struggle to save for a rainy day and pay other bills, including groceries and healthcare.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>It\u2019s Cheaper to Buy Than Rent<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As we have previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2018\/08\/01\/buying-is-now-26-3-cheaper-than-renting-in-the-us\/?a=407209-0a9a783e881394b596f3c5746f5b9a77\">mentioned<\/a>, the results of the latest <em>Rent vs. Buy Report<\/em> from <em>Trulia<\/em> show that <strong>homeownership remains cheaper than renting <\/strong>with a traditional 30-year fixed rate mortgage in the 100 largest metro areas in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The updated numbers show that the range is an average of 2% less expensive in Honolulu (HI), all the way up to 48.9% less expensive in Detroit (MI), and <strong>26.3% nationwide<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Know Your Options<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Perhaps you have already saved enough to buy your first home.\u00a0A nationwide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildium.com\/resource\/2017-renters-survey\/\">survey<\/a>\u00a0of about 1,166 renters found that <strong>34% said they rent because they cannot afford to buy<\/strong>, 29% said they cannot afford to buy where they live, and <strong>nearly a quarter (24%) were saving to buy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Many first-time homebuyers who believe that they need a large down payment may be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2018\/06\/25\/you-do-not-need-20-down-to-buy-your-home-now\/?a=407209-0a9a783e881394b596f3c5746f5b9a77\">holding themselves back<\/a>\u00a0from their dream homes.
